Low self-esteemed people face interpersonal challenges: They doubt their value as relational partners and project these doubts on future relations. This study examined the correlation between:ballroom dancers' self-esteem (SE) & their need-to-belong (NTB) and with the number of months/years they have practiced social ballroom dancing (SBD). The recent increased interest in ballroom dancing among internationally diverse populations has not been adequately studied. Very little attention has been dedicated to identifying the possible relational benefits that arise through the practice of SBD. This study was designed to address this gap in the knowledge base in real-life setting among general adult-population. Interestingly, the majority of participants in this study (245 of the 307) reported that ballroom dancing improved their SE. This perception was significantly correlated with participants' SE (p value = .004), that is, participants who held the view that SBD improved their SE, indeed showed higher levels of SE. It is hoped that the findings of this study will spur the scientific and clinical communities to further explore SBD as a resource for studying interpersonal functioning.

Same-Sex Ballroom Dance

Same-sex ballroom dance is a realitvely new phenomenon. Besides artistic and sport aspects it has social relevance, too. In this book I analyze how female same-sex competitive ballroom dance can challenge patriarchal order. I argue that same-sex dancing is not simply an imitation of male-female dancing by two women, but it challenges the notion of patriarchal male-female relations reflected symbolically in dance. It cannot totally eliminate power differences between the partners, though. Ballroom dance is a symbolic representation of gender relations. Previous results also show how same-sex partnerships challenge the notion of gender relations. These let me expect that same-sex dancing challenges the notion of gender relations. Ballroom dance is a performance of heterosexuality and conventional gender roles. It is a symbolic representation of male-female sexual and social relationships. Same-sex dance has the potential to challenge these patriarchal relations by disconnecting gender from dance roles and creating more balanced roles. This study can meet the interest of those studing social sciences, especially gender studies, gay studies, social psychology or sociology.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In social situations, a wallflower is a slang term used to describe shy or unpopular individuals who do not socialize or participate in activities at social events. It is most often used to describe someone who stays close to a wall and out of the main area of social activity. The term originated from ballroom dances, where the people who did not wish to dance (or had no partner) remained close to the walls of the dance hall. The wallflower, genus Erysimum, sometimes grows on old walls.According to the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd ed), the first known usage of the term in this sense was in an 1820 poem entitled County Ball by Winthrop Mackworth Praed. It was originally used to refer to women, and only in the context of dances, more recently the term has been expanded to include men and other social gatherings. The book The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is about a young boy who is a shy awkward high school freshman. In this book the term is used in a slightly different sense, but with a fairly similar meaning.
